Why DCAD Could Propel Wilm’s Growth

If you live in Wilmington and haven't heard about "DCAD" - don't worry, that may all change soon. Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD), located on Market Street has been quietly operating since 1997. Wilmington's center-city "scene" may soon change once DCAD establishes itself as a leader in professional art and design. What many people do not know is DCAD's plans to bring more students to the city. Just take a look at this excerpt from Wilmington's 2013 Annual Budget report: [message_box color="yellow"]The Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD), located on Market Street, was founded in 1997 as a collaborative effort between two of the United States's most distinguished art schools: Pratt Institute and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Delaware's first and only professional art and design school, DCAD has grown from fifty students in its first year to 245 full-time students. Many of these students live in DCADprovided student housing, creating the largest residential student population the City of Wilmington and DCAD have seen to date. To support the future growth of DCAD’s curriculum and student population, the school purchased the former Brandywine Suites Hotel in the 700 block of Market Street and is undertaking a $3 million dollar renovation to convert the former hotel into a campus residential facility providing 98 beds. The project also includes new office and meeting spaces, a student cafeteria and dining space, and 5,000 square feet of retail space for which the College is negotiating the location of a national art supply retailer. The completion of the new dormitory project in fall of 2012 will increase the number of students living in downtown college-sponsored housing to 190.[/message_box]

City’s First Movie Theater Is Here

That all changed late last year when Penn Cinema opened its doors to the city of Wilmington on _____ . Penn Cinema, a 14-screen and IMAX theater is located around the Riverfront area, near the Blue Rocks stadium. The theater is a $20 million project and the second location of Penn Cinema, which prizes itself on "the quality and technology of the biggest and best theater chains but the customer service of a mom-and-pop theater," as a partner in the Lilitz, PA location has been quoted saying. The amount of attention Wilmington's Riverfront is receiving has us excited! This movie theater and the soon-to-be Weston hotel further extend Wilmington's amenities. You can buy tickets on:
